Shannon leading Class 3A in stolen bases

The Greene County softball team started their season last week with six games, picking up four wins and two losses.
On Monday, May 22, the Rams traveled to Roland-Story High School where they won their first game 3-0. Two hits came off the bats of Olivia Shannon and Alexa Peters, with nine hits total from the Rams. Catcher Emma Stream had 13 putouts, with the team having 21 putouts and no errors. Emma Hoyle was on the mound, throwing 79 pitches. She allowed three hits with 12 strikeouts.
The Rams hosted Nodaway Valley on Tuesday, winning 10-0. Greene County had 11 hits with one double and one triple, each from Hoyle. The team had 15 putouts with no errors. Hoyle allowed no hits, with 14 strikeouts.
Wednesday’s game was at South Hamilton High School, where the Rams picked up another win, 10-1. Shannon, Peters, Stream and Payton Kokenge each hit singles in the game. On the field, the team had 21 putouts, 10 coming from Stream. Hoyle threw 94 pitches with two hits, one run and two walks, striking out 10 batters.
On Friday, the Rams played at home against PCM, falling 6-3. The Rams had six hits in the game, including a double from Stream and a triple from Becca Anderson. Fielding stats included 21 putouts and four errors from 29 total chances. Hoyle allowed three hits with three walks, two hit batters and 10 strikeouts.
The Rams competed in the Bob Morgan Softball Classic in Ogden on Saturday, May 27. In the game against Gilbert, the Rams fell 4-3. Greene County had seven hits, including a double from Chanlyn Cunningham and a home run from Hoyle. The Rams had 17 putouts and two errors on 22 total chances. Hoyle allowed eight hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
The second tournament game ended in a win for the Rams, beating Ogden 7-5. The Rams had 10 hits, including a double from Hoyle. On the field, there were 21 putouts and one error. Daniele Madsen took over pitching duties, throwing 112 times with 10 hits, three walks, four hit batters and four strikeouts.
Hoyle has 49 strikeouts for the season after pitching 31.2 innings. Her earned run average is 1.11, ranking her second in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and 18th in the state in Class 3A.
The Rams are taking advantage of their speed in base running, compiling a total of 34 stolen bases already this season. Shannon, a state track medalist, has 14 of the steals to her credit and leads Class 3A in that stat.
The Rams are scheduled for a busy week, with a Tuesday game at North High School against Grand View Christian, Wednesday at West Marshall High School, Thursday at home against Glidden-Ralston, Friday at home against Perry and on Saturday at Bondurant-Farrar for a tournament.
